For anyone who has been laid off, downsized, been part of a "resource action" or has been deemed "redundant" – or whatever euphemism is currently in vogue – you need to know three things:
- You did nothing wrong to warrant this
- There was nothing that you could have done at your job or with additional education to prevent it
- You are not alone
Venues such as LinkedIn have probably reassured many of you of the above statements. The problem often is that friends, neighbors and even family members have no idea what you are going through.
To give people a taste of what your situation is really like, I highly recommend them viewing the 2010 film The Company Men. It stars a number of Academy Award-winning talents: Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner.
